DUBAI – Several major houses of worship across Dubai have temporarily closed their doors following directives from authorities, citing safety and security considerations.
Among them, the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara and the Hindu Temple in Jebel Ali confirmed that services will remain suspended until further notice.
The decisions were announced on Friday and come in the wake of similar closures across Christian places of worship in the emirate. Authorities have not provided a specific timeline for reopening, with institutions instead urging devotees to await further updates.
The closures highlight a coordinated precautionary response across religious centres, reflecting wider guidance issued to ensure public safety. Worshippers have been advised to follow official communications closely, while institutions have expressed appreciation for community understanding and cooperation.
Temple notice
The Hindu Temple Dubai issued a formal statement confirming the temporary suspension of operations, stating that it would remain closed “until further notice” for safety and security reasons. The management extended apologies for the inconvenience caused and emphasised that the decision was taken in line with official guidance.
Devotees were urged to remain patient as the temple assured them that prayers for safety and well-being would continue. The announcement reflects a broader pattern of precautionary measures being implemented across the emirate’s religious landscape.
Gurudwara guidance
Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara Dubai also confirmed its closure after receiving instructions from the Community Development Authority in Dubai, saying the directive was issued as a precautionary measure.
The Gurudwara emphasised its commitment to following instructions and requested devotees to extend their support and cooperation during this period.
Church closures
The temporary closures of the Gurudwara and Hindu temple follow similar announcements from churches across Dubai, many of which suspended in-person services starting April 3. The decision aligns with directives aimed at ensuring public safety during a period that typically sees large gatherings.
Several churches cancelled Good Friday services and encouraged worshippers to participate through livestreams or private prayer at home. Despite the announcements, some devotees still visited church premises and were seen offering prayers outside closed gates after learning of the closures.
The measures coincide with Passion or Holy Week, one of the most significant periods in the Christian calendar, when churches usually experience high attendance.
Across Dubai, religious institutions continue to emphasise safety, adherence to official directives and the importance of community cooperation as they navigate the temporary suspension of in-person worship services.
